GINGER BROOKS TAKAHASHI

I’m starting to think about my Viewfinder piece as a collection of elements rather than a singular object. The Rainbow Viewfinder as collection of elements that can be configured as an installation in a gallery setting.

Here are some of the elements:

  1. Viewfinder. Is the brass or cast iron viewfinder resonant? What happens when I attach a speaker under it?
  2. Pedestal that holds Viewfinder, the first draft is welded together.I have some drawings for a second draft.
  3. Audio: I’ve been thinking about using audio as part of the space, the sound of water rushing. Perhaps using Arduino to play the audio on when a viewer approaches the space or the Viewfinder
  4.  Imagery of American lotus root stems in the winter, perhaps wallpaper, perhaps as metal sculpture made of 1/4” rod? Thinking about the seedheads dropping their seeds into the water, into the muck.
  5. A reflection represents water. Perhaps this reflection is a mirror, mirrored acrylic, or mirrored steel?
  6. A Score for First Creek, Second Creek or a score for finding lotus roots in the Mississippi River. First, written, and then recorded.

At the end of the residency—in two weeks—I plan to create an audio file that I can show with the existing viewfinder and pedestal. I plan to create a lotus root element—whether that is graphic files that can be projected in the space or another metal sculptural element.

And as we are working in New Art City to create our online exhibition, I am thinking of how I can translate some of these elements to the digital 3D space. I have already created two 3D models in polycam. I plan to also upload some audio and video content to test out in New Art City.
